Broadcast Electronics
(BE) is stepping up nontraditional revenue and relevant text
endeavors with new features and upgrades for its text automation
system, to debut at booth N7007 during the 2008 NAB Show.
At the heart of The Radio Experience (TRE) upgrade is a new
modular architecture that streamlines message generation and
scheduling for text readout on RDS, HD Radio and Internet
streaming tuners.
With more flexibility and greater programmability, BE's The
Radio Experience now addresses a growing interest in radio
text opportunities as HD Radio and RDS become staples in major-market
stations and as traditional ad revenues level off overall.
"This upgrade brings a whole host of new revenue opportunities
to broadcasters, and a great deal of local personalization
options that wouldn't otherwise be possible from an operational
standpoint," said Ray Miklius, BE Vice President, Studio
Systems.
Opportunistic insertion of text ads for high-impact exposure
plus online text plug-ins from weather, sports and other information
providers are among the benefits. The Radio Experience is
targeted to broadcasters expanding their text operations beyond
'now playing' song and title information, and represents BE's
20-plus years in studio automation.
"There is considerable transference of technology from
our program automation and webcasting lines that we've been
able to move over to TRE," added Miklius.
The Radio Experience data generation and management system
draws from BE's AudioVAULT digital media system to automate
impressions by the clock as well as by event for opportunistic
high-impact text ads. It also borrows from BE's SoniXtream
webcast line to integrate plug-in applets from service providers
for real-time weather, stocks, sports and other information.
In addition, ad insertion technology pioneered by BE is being
used by The Radio Experience to track ads and eliminate the
possibility of running competing audio and text messages simultaneously;
smart scheduling tools prevent a text ad from running at the
same time as a competing audio spot, for example.
BE's The Radio Experience product line is available as single-station
or multiple-station configurations for automating and managing
text for one or a cluster of stations, both for RDS and HD
Radio broadcasts. New software versions of The Radio Experience
will be available by the 2008 NAB Show, with third-party plug-ins
to follow by fall 2008.
