Compix Streamlines Video Production for U. S. Army Combat Readiness/Safety Center

July 9, 2009

Compix, a leading developer of broadcast-quality character generators (CGs), announced today that the video department at the United States Army Combat Readiness/Safety Center (USACR/Safety Center) is using the company's rugged, cost-effective ConverG1 HD single-channel CG for fast, flexible production of staged events and conferences. Installed in an HD mobile production unit, the ConverG1 HD allows video staff to incorporate graphics and lower thirds into live production on the fly and, in turn, make event coverage available on DVD and via the Web with minimal turnaround time.

"The information we collect and the video we produce can save lives, and it's our job to disseminate this material to Army leaders, soldiers, families, and civilians quickly," said Bill Bauman, electronic multimedia specialist for the USACR/Safety Center. "By providing attractive, time-saving templates that allow us to put graphics and text on-screen in a matter of seconds, the Compix ConverG1 HD eliminates the need to bring video back into the shop for editing. As a result, we've been able to streamline our production process to the extent that, at the end of the day, I've got a finished DVD that I can hand out to participants."

Compix designed the ConverG1 HD CG for the video professional looking for a true broadcast level of performance for graphics and effects. The system packs a powerful punch in a convenient 4-RU chassis, outputting graphics in either SD-SDI or HD-SDI, as required. An SD/HD-SDI built-in downstream keyer enables HD and digital overlays, and the unit's SD/HD-SDI output can easily be configured upstream of the switcher.

Through the Compix GenCG software, the ConverG1 HD offers users a rich selection of standard rolls, crawls, more than 260 transition effects, as well as a user-definable clock/timer. An integrated scheduler suite, direct import animation software, and stock fonts and libraries aid in smooth, speedy design.

The USACR/Safety Center produces more than 60,000 DVDs each year, and the ConverG1 HD has enabled the video department to get video from events and conferences into the hands of safety officers at every Army base with minimal delay. Live event coverage, enhanced with graphics and lower-thirds, is delivered directly to a hard drive for DVD authoring. Finished video productions from the USACR/Safety Center also are posted to the Web and distributed to military broadcast channels including the American Forces Network and the Pentagon Channel, among others.

"The Compix character generator is simple and user-friendly with a robust array of tasteful and useful templates that allow us to add graphics and information to any piece of video," added Bauman. "The system has allowed us to cut production time substantially, saving us days, hours, and even weeks in distributing valuable information to the Armed Forces."
