New Family of DVB-ASI PCIe Interface Cards Now Available From Computer Modules, Inc.

Computer Modules, Inc., a leader in DVB-ASI interfaces for computer servers, today announced the introduction of a complete new family of DVB-ASI cards. DVEO, the broadcast division of CMI, is now shipping PCI Express versions of all their feature-rich DVB Master™ PCI interface cards, including low profile form factor cards. The cards will be showcased at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam, September 7-11.

Since the beginning of 2007, Dell, Hewlett Packard, IBM, and other server class computers have begun to switch over to the PCI Express bus for some slots in their motherboards. This makes sense because the PCI Express bus runs at 2.6 gigabytes per second, versus 150 megabytes per second for the PCI bus. At some point in the not too distant future the PCI bus will likely be retired from use. (In the meantime, DVEO will offer DVB Master cards in both PCI and PCIe formats.)

PCIe has many reliability-oriented features necessary to create high availability systems that can be safely deployed in on-air applications.

PCI Express is superior to PCI for several reasons:
1) It is a serial bus instead of parallel
2) It is scalable to 16 gigabytes per second data transfers
3) It supports hot plugins
4) It offers advanced power management and quality of service

DVEO’s new PCIe product line offers broadcasters and content providers an easy way to add DVB-ASI connectivity to their servers and PC’s. “This new high speed scaleable architecture is designed to future proof server designs,” said Laszlo Zoltan, Vice President of Sales for DVEO. “The increased reliability and performance of PCI Express make it ideal for content servers and video over the Internet.”
