da Vinci Systems
today announced that Blackmagic Design, a post-production
facility located in Singapore, has selected the Resolve
RT digital mastering suite to perform real-time image processing
for color grading of local and international television commercials
(TVCs).
By combining the new Resolve RT with a da Vinci Revival
restoration system and a 4K-capable scanner, Blackmagic Design
became one of the first facilities in the world to deploy
this workflow for grading and delivery of high-and standard-definition
(HD and SD) TVCs.
Blackmagic Design also uses its Resolve RT/Revival suite for
other digital intermediate (DI) projects, including feature
film finishing, TV programs, and HD documentaries.
"The addition of the Resolve RT nonlinear grading system
to our workflow has enabled us to offer regional clients the
option of high-end grading, so we can now attract premium
work here in Singapore," said Peter Barber, director
of Creative Services at Blackmagic Design. "Our clients
have literally been blown away with our new abilities to eliminate
rendering time and grade images in 2K, regardless if the requirements
are for HD or SD deliverables."
Barber added that the principal advantages of the Resolve
RT system are its superior object tracking capabilities and
an almost unlimited number of layers and effects. Resolve
RT configurations include six-vector secondary correction
and support for external mattes so that predetermined regions
may quickly and easily be isolated for colors or selective
processing.
Blackmagic design was interested in the advantages of nonlinear
DI processing for several reasons. "Understanding that
clients like to change shots, even during grading, negative
cutting has become an impractical process," reported
Barber. "Additionally, valuable colorist time is not
well spent shuttling through rolls of film to find selected
takes, as in conventional telecine color grading."
With the new Resolve RT's open-access file structure, Blackmagic
Design colorists can now take advantage of in-context grading,
which enables film directors to utilize their time effectively,
focusing on the grade, rather than wasting time waiting for
shots to be found.
Blackmagic Design's Resolve RT is currently being deployed
on high-end TVCs. For each commercial, Blackmagic Design Senior
Colorist Charlie Ellis takes the EDL (or on some occasions,
even multiple EDLs) from the confirmed offline edit, scans
the selected reels at 2K resolution on the facility's Cintel
Ditto 4K film scanner, and then loads the material and corresponding
EDL(s) into Resolve RT for in-context grading. After grading,
Blackmagic Design uses the Resolve RT's PowerMastering
feature to provide real-time generation of multiple HD or
SD deliverables, each with uniquely applied color and size
settings based on a single color-corrected 2K master. Without
the need to copy data back to the SAN, colorists can output
graded images "on the fly" to data, HDCAM SR 4:4:4,
HD D5, or SD formats.
"In our industry, Blackmagic Design is recognized for
using fine engineering and technology to yield maximum creativity,
quality, and performance for clients, and the Resolve RT system
successfully allows the company to accomplish these goals,"
said Bill Robertson, vice president and general manager of
da Vinci Systems. "We at da Vinci pride ourselves on
doing the same, and so it's a natural fit for Blackmagic Design
Singapore to select the da Vinci Resolve RT."
