LEDs for Projection Systems Report Shows Bright Future for the Category

October 27, 2008

Source: Insight Media

Insight Media (Norwalk, CT; www.insightmedia.info) has just released the “ 2008 LEDs for Projection Systems” report. The report analyzes the price and performance of LED devices, thermal management solutions, optical collection options and LED drivers for use in projection systems.

The report updates a 2006 edition and finds the forecasts from that report were relatively accurate, with advancements coming a bit quicker than predicted 2 years ago, with the prospects for the next 4 years continuing to be quite impressive.

LEDs are enabling projectors from 10 to over 700 lumens today. The report finds that the ability to increase LED efficiency while simultaneously reducing costs, will help to drive the changeover from lamp-based to LED-based solutions.

“Understanding the roadmaps for LEDs and associated optics, thermal management and electronics is critical to understanding how LED-based projection systems will be commercialized and how they will compete with lamp- and laser-based systems,” noted Insight Media President, Chris Chinnock.

“The performance of a projection system with LED illumination is highly dependent upon the size of the imager and the size of the LED source – what we call the etendue ratio,” stated the report’s principal author, Matthew Brennesholtz. “In the report, we forecast the collected light output from red, green and blue LEDs for various etendue ratios and LED die sizes through 2012 with expected, optimistic and conservative outcomes. This report provides the technical analysis and forecasts needed by engineers, product planners and marketing executives to better understand the full range of options available to them to create LED-based projectors and make informed decisions about the future of LEDs for projection.”

For example, the report finds that in 2006 collected green LED light was only about 55 lumens (LED area of 1mm2, etendue ratio of 2), but this will grow to 764 lumens by 2012 in the expected case, and over 1100 lumens in the optimistic scenario.

Developments in LEDs are being helped by a wide interest in their use in LCD backlights, general illumination and specialized illumination – all of which is powering advancements in device manufacturing, packaging and signal control. While the needs for projection systems are at the high end of the LED performance spectrum, large potential markets for projection systems are also driving additional investment.

“Progress is coming to red, green and blue LEDs, but not necessarily at the same rate,” continued Brennesholtz. “This report shows the differences and how this may impact projection development.”

Separate stand alone reports from Insight Media will use the output of the LEDs for Projection Systems data to support specific analysis and forecasts on different product areas such as pico-projectors, ultraportable (sometimes call pocket) projectors, home theater projectors and RPTV, etc.

The LEDs for Projection Systems report is available now as a pdf file for $3,000. More details.
