  • International expansion including new Australian Broadcast Centre
  • Development of BBC iPlayer

Red Bee Media will be using IBC2007 to showcase its full range of services including playout, subtitling, branding, promotions, media planning and the broadband TV services it has been developing over the past year, including BBC iPlayer. Its stand, 3.342 in Hall 3, will be an interactive journey through services such as Digital Hive, which is enabling broadcasters, content owners and platform operators to engage new audiences and get more value from content across multiple platforms. This is happening in Europe and soon in Australia through the planned Broadcast Centre in Sydney.

“This year we have been working with a range of content owners and telecommunication companies to develop IPTV and broadband TV services through our Digital Hive. Digital Hive differentiates us from any other player in the industry. Our technical, creative and media planning teams work together to make sure audiences engage with the new services and our clients get full value from their investment. Clients can use the full service or cherry pick what they need,” said Pam Masters, CEO of Red Bee Media.

BBC iPlayer is the UK public service broadcaster’s on demand service which will be available over the internet to UK TV licence fee payers from 27 July 2007 and utilises the technology and workflows in Red Bee Media's Digital Hive. Red Bee Media is responsible for content ingest, transcoding and quality control. This happens through an automated workflow system, enabling programmes to be quickly re-purposed for BBC iPlayer. Red Bee Media also produces rich metadata tagged to each programme, enabling audiences to search for their favourite shows as well as discover new content.

Pam continues: “Over the past year international expansion has also been a focus. We have been busy opening an office in Paris and exploring the rest of Europe, Asia and Australia for more opportunities for Red Bee Media”.

Red Bee Media opened an office in Paris, France, in January this year to help broadcasters meet targets set by the French Government to subtitle 100% of TV programmes by 2010. Over the past six months it has won subtitling contracts with the French national broadcaster, M6, and the French public broadcaster’s parliament channel, La Chaîne Parlementaire-Assemblée nationale.

In March Red Bee Media announced it was planning to build a multi-client Broadcast Centre in Sydney, Australia. Red Bee Media already owns the Australian Caption Centre, one of the largest subtitling companies in the world. The planned Australian Broadcast Centre will use similar media management and playout technology to Red Bee Media's existing world class facility in London, UK.

Chris Howe, Director of Emerging Technology at Red Bee Media who designed the technical architecture of the Broadcast Centre in London and is now working on the Broadcast Centre in Sydney, will be speaking at the IBC conference session: Outsourcing and the Media Service Provider (Thursday 6 September, 16.00-17.30). In the session Chris will talk about his experience while working within the BBC and then at Red Bee Media as well as his experience of the attitude in Australia towards outsourcing playout.

Red Bee Media’s stand at IBC2007 will showcase its complete range of services under one roof. To book an appointment with Chris Howe, Director of Emerging Technology, on the stand please contact Kate.Groves@redbeemedia.com, telephone:+44 (0)20 8495 4754 or during the exhibition Clare Plaisted mobile/cell: +44 (0) 7739 920287.
