New contract enables broadcaster to maximize efficiency, profits

Horizon Broadcasting Group of Bend, Oregon, has chosen Toronto-based Specialty Data Systems (SDS) Inc., a leading North American provider of broadcast management software, to help consolidate and manage data for its five radio stations.

The broadcaster has installed SDS’s flagship broadcast management software system, SDS Symphony, at Oregon radio stations KQAK-FM, KBNW-AM, KWPK-FM and KLTW-FM in Bend, and KRCO-AM in Prineville. The system will also be used to manage the broadcaster’s new community web portal, called MyCentralOregon.com. According to Keith Shipman, Horizon President and CEO, the technology provides the stations with a powerful, unified solution that enables Horizon to be more efficient and maximize profits.

“SDS Symphony brings a breath of fresh air to the U.S. broadcast industry as an extremely
powerful, high-quality alternative to existing solutions on the market and delivered by a company dedicated to serving broadcasters,” Shipman said, explaining that he evaluated a wide range of solutions to replace the company’s current software before choosing the broadcast management system that best met Horizon’s needs.

“We found that SDS Symphony met all of our objectives – it’s intuitive, user friendly and integrates well with our existing audio delivery system,” he explained, adding that while the system is of high quality, it’s valued properly for today’s broadcaster. “SDS Symphony is a Cadillac traffic and billing system at a fraction of the cost. And, most importantly, SDS has a strong commitment to excellent customer service.”

SDS Symphony provides broadcasters with a common database to integrate sales, traffic, programming, operations, and accounting, enabling instantaneous communication between stations and eliminating the need for data reentry and cross-verification. Information can be shared across departments without the need to re-key information or use paper. Users access information on-line in real-time, filtered and formatted to meet their particular needs, whether they’re programming airtime, booking orders, scheduling promos, producing sales and commission reports or enforcing credit rules.

“With SDS’s technology, data is always unified and up-to-date, from traffic revisions to bookings to management reports,” said Dave Cole, President of SDS, emphasizing that the system’s two-way flow of data allows for faster implementation, maximizes broadcasters’ efficiency and profits, and reduces costs.

“SDS understands the challenges broadcasters face in today’s continually evolving technological world,” Cole said. “We’ve created in SDS Symphony a powerful, efficient and flexible solution that gives radio and television broadcasters the automated tools they need to succeed, today and into the future.”
