Snell today announced that the British Broadcasting
Corporation (BBC) will install a Kahuna SD/HD multiformat
production switcher as a key component in its new state-of-the-art
broadcasting facility in Cambridge, U.K.
The broadcaster chose the Kahuna switcher as part of a comprehensive
upgrade to digital and HD-ready broadcasting equipment, coinciding
with the upcoming move to the new operations center. Systems
integration and installation is being provided by Dega Broadcast
Systems, a U.K.-based provider of technical design and installation
services to the broadcast industry.
As the live production switcher for BBC Cambridge's local
news programming, the Kahuna will enable producers to seamlessly
control video feeds from the studio, servers, and remote cameras.
In addition to the main evening news broadcast, the Kahuna's
ability to interface with a Calrec audio system will enable
a small crew to easily produce short news bulletins throughout
the day. The integrated IMPAKT DVE option from Snell will
enable operators to access a variety of powerful 3-D digital
effects.
Kahuna's multiformat SD/HD capabilities, enabled by Snell
FormatFusion technology, will smooth the way for any future
transition to HD production at BBC Cambridge by allowing operators
to seamlessly mix content from SD sources into HD broadcasts
without requiring expensive upconversion equipment. In addition,
Kahuna's intuitive and industry-familiar control panels will
allow the new facility and its operators to get up and running
quickly.
