Triveni Digital,
a subsidiary of LG Electronics (LGE), today announced that
Richard Chernock, director of technology at the company, will
be presenting at the 57th Annual IEEE Broadcast Symposium
(www.ieee.org/bts) on Nov. 1, 2007 in Washington, D.C. His
DTV session, titled "Non-Real-Time Services," will
address the emergence of non-real-time (NRT) services and
how this model for content delivery enables broadcasters to
capitalize more fully on their media assets. The presentation
will introduce the basic concepts and technical requirements
of NRT services, and provide illustrative scenarios.
"The broadcast industry is changing, with more people
wanting to consume media at their convenience, rather than
when it's aired," said Chernock. "The transition
from analog to digital gives broadcasters new opportunities
for continuing and growing their business, and NRT and mobile
services have emerged as top prospects for connecting with
viewers. If broadcasters prepare themselves to offer NRT services,
they will be positioned to get their prime assets into the
hands of the viewer, regardless of the health of their traditional,
linear ad-supported broadcast business."
NRT content is content delivered in advance of use and stored
in the receiving device for access on-demand. Such content
can include either "traditional" TV fare or customized
information targeted to other platforms, such as PCs, handheld
media devices, or even commercial platforms. Typical applications
for NRT services include push VOD; news, information, and
weather services; personalized TV channels; music distribution;
reference information; and applications or games, whether
advertiser-sponsored or sold by subscription.
"Standards for NRT delivery are under development now,
and the involvement of working engineers will be critical
to the immediate and long-term viability of these standards,"
added Chernock. "I plan to outline key aspects of NRT
delivery models and the Advanced Television Systems Committee
(ATSC) standards under consideration, and I encourage my fellow
engineers to build on this knowledge and become involved in
this exciting and quickly growing aspect of the broadcast
industry."
Chernock's presentation is scheduled as the afternoon DVT
session on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007, at The Hotel Washington,
in Washington, D.C.
